Are Dentists Open In Vancouver, BC During Coronavirus?

Many clients are wondering if dentists are currently open. Currently, most dental offices are engaging in emergency and essential dental services.

A Public Health Emergency was declared on March 23rd by our Provincial Health Officer, Dr Bonnie Henry due to several Coronavirus infections in BC. The governing officials pushed to close all non-essential services. Where does that leave dental offices?

Since many services that a dentist provides are considered essential and emergency, The College of Dental Surgeons of BC requires dentists to perform emergency dental procedures for their patients.

What Kind of Treatments Can a Dentist Perform During COVID-19?

Following the guidelines of CDSBC we define emergency, essential and non-essential dental care as:

Emergency Dental Care

Potentially life-threatening conditions requiring immediate management or treatment including:

  • Trauma to the orofacial complex potentially compromising the patient’s airway
  • Uncontrolled severe pain, infection, and bleeding

Essential (Urgent) Care

Essential care includes conditions that require immediate attention to relieve pain and/or risk of infection. Some examples are:

  • Third molar pain
  • Post-op dry socket dressing changes
  • Abscess with localized pain and swelling
  • Dental trauma involving dislocation and fracture of a tooth

Non-Essential (Elective) Care

Non-essential care is the non-urgent, standard dental care.

If you have any questions or feel like you may have an emergency or urgent dental needs, please give us a call.

How Do I Know if I’m Safe to Come to the Dentist?  How does Loft 19 ensure that patients are protected from infection?

To ensure that our patients, staff, and everyone involved are protected from receiving or giving the infection, we strictly follow the infection prevention and control guidelines set out by the CDSBC.

Dental offices are essentially small versions of a hospital. We follow very strict controls including the use of personal protective equipment, gloves, masks, and face shields. Included in this is the standard practice of hygiene, sanitization and diligent cleaning.

What is Loft 19 Dental Doing to Go Above and Beyond to Protect You?

According to the CDC, COVID-19 can be transmitted through respiratory droplets. Therefore, we believe that using a high-quality air purifier is a necessity in any dental office. At Loft 19, we use one of the best purifiers called Surgically Clean Air. With 6-stages of filtration and sterilization, we are certain that we have the maximum removal of airborne particulates.
